WHAT IS THE DITALS?

The DITALS Certification is a cultural title awarded by the “Università per Stranieri di Siena” that assesses the theoretical and practical qualifications in the field of Teaching Italian to Foreigners. Its legal validity, in Italy and abroad, depends on the laws of the single states and institutions. In many cases it is already considered a valid title for the allocation of a score in the recruitment of teachers or for the allocation of credits within an educational curriculum of language teaching methodology.

1/DITALS PREPARATION: DITALS BASE (B2 level)

The DITALS BASE Certification is a cultural title awarded by the “Università per Stranieri di Siena” that assesses the initial competence in the field of Teaching Italian to Foreigners.<br> It is particularly addressed to future teachers of Italian as a foreign language whose mother tongue is not Italian.

Prerequisites:

  • High School Diploma (ensuring access to University);
  • Equivalent to a B2 Level (Common European Framework) for candidates of mother tongue other than Italian

Plus one of the following:

  1. University bachelor Degree (at least 3 years) in humanistic studies (other than scientific - to verify)
  2. University bachelor Degree (at least 3 years) in other fields + at least 15 hours of internship* or experience in teaching Italian as a foreign language
  3. High School Diploma + 30 hours of teaching experience in any subject (with at least 15 hours in teaching Italian as a foreign language) or internship* in classes of Italian as a foreign language.

* The internship can be completed online at the University for Foreigners of Siena (API – Preparatory Activities for teaching).


2/ DITALS PREPARATION: DITALS LEVEL I CERTIFICATION (C1 level)

The DITALS Level I Certification certifies a core competence in the field of language teaching methodology and a specific expertise targeted at a particular learner profile: children, adolescents, adults and the elderly, immigrants , university students, learners of Italian origin, learners whose mother tongue is homogeneous, tourism operators, catholic religious and USA students (University Study Abroad programmes).

Prerequisites:

  • Equivalent to a  C1 Level (Common European Framework) for candidates of language other than Italian
  • High School Diploma (ensuring access to University)
  • Specific training in teaching Italian as a foreign language (minimum 24 hours): attendance of a monitored course by the Ditals Centre of Unistrasi
  • Declaration concerning technological and multimedia skills.

Plus one of the following options: declaration concerning teaching experience:

  1. At least 60 hours of teaching Italian as a foreign language
  2. At least 60 hours of internship in teaching Italian as a foreign language
  3. At least 60 hours of teaching experience in any subject in private or public schools or organisations, with at least 15 hours of teaching Italian to foreigners (including internships)

  • 15 maximum per class (av. 6-8)

  • Exam session: 1 per year (new course!)

DITALS I Course fact file:

  • 20 years old+
  • 2 weeks
  • Level: C1-C2
  • 13 hours per week + optional internship*
  • Between 2-6 PM
  • 15 maximum per class (av. 6-8)
  • Starting dates: 5 times per year (see pricelist for details)
  • Exam sessions: 2 per year

*It is possible to combine DITALS courses with different types of internships done directly here at ALCE, depending on previous experience and individual needs:

• Ditals 1 / Ditals Base + 16 hours internship
• Ditals 1 / Ditals Base + 20 hours internship
• Ditals 1 / Ditals Base + 30 hours internship
• Ditals 1 / Ditals Base + 60 hours internship

** It is possible to add General Italian or exam preparation courses before, during or after the DITALS Base course.
